My name is Derek Hall, and this is my second year of teaching 6th grade science and STEM in Atlantic. I recently graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, this past May. I am originally from Denison, Iowa, where I graduated from in May 2013. I have three other siblings: Luke (graduated from Iowa State), Ashley (Junior at Harlan), and Aidan (Freshman at Harlan). My parents also live in Harlan, so it is nice to be close to home!
My favorite sports teams are the Iowa Hawkeyes, Dallas Cowboys, and any team with LeBron James! This year I am also part of the football coaching staff where I am the head freshman football coach.

I attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Where I was a four-year starter in Wrestling and played 3 seasons of Soccer there. I majored in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education K-8 Strat. I and coaching, and eventually obtained my Special Education Strat. I for 5-12. My first job was at Southwest Valley CSD in Corning, Iowa where I taught HS special education. I taught there two years and then I moved back to my hometown and taught at Nodaway Valley CSD for 4 years as an HS special education teacher and Head HS wrestling coach and various assistant coaching jobs. During my tenure at NV, I obtained my Master’s Degree in Sports Administration with an emphasis on coaching and teaching leadership through Upper Iowa University. I love to be active but do enjoy my days of relaxation with family and friends. I am always up for playing sports, listening to music, and watching movies.

I have lived in Villisca Iowa for most of my life. The feeling of love and community of small towns brings me comfort and peace. As much as I would love to live where there are palm trees and ocean views, there is no place like Iowa and there is certainly nowhere better to raise children. My own children are very dear to my heart. My three boys attend Southwest Valley Schools in Corning/Villisca. They are wonderful and I couldn't be more proud of each one of them. My daughter attends Washington Elementary and will be starting 3rd grade this year. She has really flourished in Atlantic Community Schools and I am forever thankful to the kind and caring teachers that she has had to help make that happen.
Teaching is near and dear to my heart. Seeing the differences that I can make in the lives of students and their families reminds me why I started on this journey. Our classroom is a safe space where lifelong friendships are made each year. There is no better feeling than getting a phone call from a past student with a life update. We all share their successes and are cheering them on! Here is to a wonderful 5th year at AHS! Let's make it a great one!

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1984 with a degree in Music Education. I taught music for 8 years in 3 different districts before having children. I spent from 1992-2004 at home with our 3 boys on our little hobby farm, raising kids and helping with the cattle. When our youngest started school, I did some subbing for a couple of years and started in 2004 working with home school families through our home school assistance program. I also have an endorsement in Gifted Education from Drake University.
In my free time I enjoy time with kids and grandkids, following Trojan wrestling and lake time We also love the ISU Cyclones and go to a lot of football games. I enjoy good books, cooking and being outdoors.

I graduated from Dartmouth College in 2005 with a B.A. in Psychology and Education. I then served as an officer in the Army for four years. I spent most of military career at Fort Lewis, WA, and did one year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan. I decided to leave the military to pursue a career in education in 2009. I received a Master's in Education from Franklin Pierce University, and while working towards my Master's, worked as a paraprofessional. This is my eighth year working as a special educator. I truly enjoy working with my students and watching them grow and learn!
