I have lived in Villisca, Iowa for most of my life. The feeling of love and community of small town life brings me comfort and peace. As much as I would love to live where there are palm trees and ocean views, there is no place like Iowa and there is certainly nowhere better to raise children. My son, Gage Haffner, is a freshman at AHS this year and my daughter, Jade Knapp, is in 5th grade at Schuler Elementary. They have flourished in Atlantic and I am forever grateful to the kind and caring teachers that they have had to help make this happen.
Teaching is my passion. AHS has shown me what it means to be a great teacher. We are here to make an IMPACT. Seeing the differences that I can make in the lives of students and their families reminds me why I started on this journey. They are my motivation and the reason I chose this path. Our classroom is a safe space where lifelong friendships are made each year. There is no better feeling than getting a phone call from a past student with a life update. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1984 with a degree in Music Education. I taught music for 8 years in 3 different districts before having children. I spent from 1992-2004 at home with our 3 boys on our little hobby farm, raising kids and helping with the cattle. When our youngest started school, I did some subbing for a couple of years and started in 2004 working with home school families through our home school assistance program. Hey there! My name is Bryce Smith, but all my students and teacher friends call me Mr. Smith. I graduated from Iowa State University in Fall 2019 with a degree in Kinesiology & Health and two minors in Health Education and Coaching. This is my first year as an educator in Atlantic CSD and I'll be a part of the CCEOC staff as well as the Grade 11 Aviation teacher. I'm also involved in the athletics community as a football coach for the freshman team. I taught for one year in the Diocese of Des Moines as a Physical Education/ Health teacher and served as the athletic director for my school.

Mrs. Cheryl Thompson is in her fifteenth year teaching vocal music for the Atlantic Community School district. Her duties at Schuler Elementary include 4th and 5th grade General Music classes. At the Middle School, Mrs. Thompson teaches 6th grade choir, 7th grade choir and 8th grade choir and Show Choir. She is also directs the annual 7th grade Musical, Honor Choirs and Festvals for her students. Ukulele classes are offered to the Middle School and in 5th grade general music class.

Shortly after graduating, I received my master's from UNI in Instructional Technology. This will be my 6th year of teaching!. I was born and raised in Atlantic and am glad to be a Trojan once again! I received my Bachelor's degree from Buena Vista University. My husband Ethan and I have three sons, Zach, Oscar, and Oliver and have a little girl due in December! Along with cheering on the Trojans you can also catch us cheering on the Cyclones!
